I grew up in St. Louis and I was surprised to learn that telling a joke prior to getting candy is not mandatory in other cities. In St. Louis, trick-or-treaters are expected to tell a joke at each house prior to getting candy. So now that I have kids of my own, I help them prepare their material on the weeks leading up to Halloween and one of their favorites is Halloween Knock Knock Jokes.
In their younger years (under 5) my kids would inevitably lose focus and the prepared jokes would become made up nonsense as they went door to door. Now that they are older (5 – 10 years old), the material has gotten more focused and they usually have 3-4 good jokes ready to use by Halloween night.
